When we moved out West, we intended to take a big trip back "home" every summer. Covid, of course, had other plans for us last year. But this summer felt safer. So in late July, we hopped in the car and headed back to the Midwest for two weeks of fun, family, friends, and humidity!
Our first stop was...Omaha, Nebraska. But just for one night. The hotel was nice, but we were off again in the morning.
Our next stop was Niles, Illinois, where we got to see Dora for the first time since we moved, not to mention her wonderful family. It had been way too long!
After that, we headed to Oma and Oma's house in Indiana, where Chris and I dropped off the kids and immediately turned around and drove back to Chicago for a day. I was overjoyed to be back in my favorite city and may have gone a bit overboard with the tourist pictures.

Next, it was off to Oma and Opa's lake for the Hietbrink family reunion. As usual, we spent a lot of time swimming, boating, fishing, hammocking, exploring, catching turtles, cousin-ing, and relaxing around the fire. Pepper especially enjoyed the fishing.
On our last day, Jill honed her business skills by setting up her very first lemonade stand (with the help of her dedicated support staff). Turns out, family members make very good customers, especially when they can buy on credit!
Finally, we went up to Wisconsin to Nana and Papa's lake house, where we celebrated their 50th anniversary, and also did more swimming and boating and fishing.

Overall, it was a great trip and we were sorry to leave. We may live out West now, but we'll always be Midwesterners at heart.
