The polar bear at Lincoln Park Zoo is an elusive beast. It's rare to catch a glimpse of him in his habitat. It's even rarer to see him swimming in his pool, up close to the glass. But we got lucky this week, and it was worth the wait!
Tussling with his red plastic ball.
Coming up for air.
Those are some big feet!
Our good luck continued as we passed by the lion enclosure, where we had another close encounter:
That's an intimidating silhouette.
Mmm, lunch.
I didn't get a picture of it, but we also had a close encounter with a large African bird (taller than Jill) when we entered the Africa house. He'd decided to jump down into the walkway and stood right in our path until a keeper came and shooed him back into the trees.
In light of our track record, we decided to avoid the ape house in case we got close enough to a chimp to get hit by some flying poop... But of course we are always mindful of how blessed we are to live in an awesome city with a free zoo that we can go to anytime we want to see these beautiful animals up close!
